Community Cooperation benefits New Shelter

The City of Kyle and Hays County approached the City of San Marcos about expanding their facility to meet their respective municipal and county needs. San Marcos was already planning an expansion and this would allow them to substantially increase the size of their facility. This is the second phase of a master plan Connolly prepared for the community. The benefit to all is a lower unit cost, because the facility is larger and also fosters cooperation between the communities.

The stand-alone new building has two kennel rooms for holding, each with large and medium size dog kennels. Each habitat has a pocket door to a smaller space that can be used while either kennel is being cleaned. This configuration is a model of efficiency, as the two kennel pods in each room have three linear walkways instead of the more common four. This layout also allows the kennels to face out to the outside walls with windows, thus reducing the barking associated with kennels that face each other. A synthetic grass courtyard will also provide a low maintenance outdoor canine exercise space.

San Marcos teams with adjacent communities to maximize its investment in an expanded facility.
